Star Trek and Hangover Will Boldly Go Where No One Has Gone Before...If Their Parties Are Any Indication

November 11, 2009 Given today's rocky economy, it's understandable that the year has been relatively muted for studio DVD/Blu-ray launch parties.

There hasn't been much to compete with Disney's massive French food feast supporting its release of Ratatouille a while back. Or Warner's trapeze artists flying around when they bowed Superman Returns.

But Paramount and Warner have many buzzing over their respective kick-off parties for Star Trek, to be held Monday Nov. 16, and The Hangover on Dec. 10.

With Star Trek, the invitation is luxuriously printed on thick foam posterboard material. Also awesome, there is a shot of the Enterprise looking like it's taking off into the great unknown.

The party is fittingly taking place at Los Angeles' Griffith Observatory - LA's best place to see stars. Normally, this bustling city is too lit-up 24/7 to see much in the way of nighttime landscapes.

Next up is The Hangover party, set for Las Vegas nightclub Pure on Dec. 10. Just the chance to see some of the cast revisit their partying ways is enough of a selling point for me.

Hopefully, if these parties goes well, it will motivate other studios to throw flashy shindigs for DVD/Blu-ray titles. Selfishly, I admit they are fun to attend. But the typical appearance of the films' cast/crew at these launch events normally does help studio promotional campaigns.

Sony should also be commended for having a party last month for Julie and Julia, at upscale Beverly Hills restaurant Fogo de Chao.
