The Coen brothers latest film, A Serious Man, has already received some award attention, including winning the Robert Altman Award at the Independent Spirit Awards and Best Screenplay at the National Board of Review. The limited-release film also was nominated for a Best Actor Golden Globe for Michael Stuhlbarg’s performance. Universal will capitalize on the award buzz when it releases the film on Feb. 9 (prebook now) on DVD ($29.98) and Blu-ray Disc ($36.98). Both releases include featurettes, and the Blu-ray also has BD Live. The dark comedy follows a physics professor (Stuhlbarg), who must deal with a wife (Sari Lennick) who is leaving him, a brother (Richard Kind) who won’t move out of the house and rabbis who fail to give him guidance. Paul Weitz's fantasy comedy Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant didn't bite at the box office, drawing in only $13.7 million in an in-and-out wide release. But this movie, starring John C. Reilly, is based on the novel by Darren Shan, and fans of the book series should seek out the film when it hits the home market. And that will be on Feb. 23 (prebook Jan. 5). Freak will be priced at $29.98 on...Read More Posted by Samantha Clark on December 23, 2009

Warner will roll out The Informant! as a combo DVD/Blu-ray on Feb. 23, marking one of the first examples of the studio's aggressive 2010 commitment to this configuration. The combo title, featuring a standard-definition DVD, Blu-ray and digital copy in one set, is priced at $35.99 SRP. Blu-ray exclusives include director/screenwriter commentary. There will also be a single-disc standard DVD version at $28.98. Orders are due Jan. 19. The Informant! didn't do huge box office business, generating just about $33 million in the U.S. However, I'll bet the DVD/Blu-ray will do relatively stronger as star Matt Damon recently scored a Golden Globe nomination for his acting performance. Of course The Informant! will look even better on shelves if Damon happens to actually win the Globe when the awards are announced on Jan. 17. Posted by Cheryl Cheng on December 17, 2009
