Sony Benches Chick Flicks, Fanboys Cheer
September 11, 2008
It looks like Sony won't be releasing several previously slated girl-geared Blu-ray movies, including
Maid in Manhattan,
Mona Lisa Smile and
My Best Friend's Wedding. These were scheduled to street on Sept. 30,
according to a post at Blu-ray.com. It's not clear if the cancellation is permanent or if the titles will just be postponed.
The resulting comments lead me to believe that the hardest core Blu-ray fans are pretty happy to seem them go. Maybe this will free up time for Sony to get out more of its Steven Seagal flicks on Blu-ray?
Or as this 'Soundwave420' puts it, "good more room for good movies."
And 'Stockstar1138': "this just ruined my day...if it was opposite day."
I'll take a wild guess, and say that Sony probably initially thought this would provide excellent counter-programming to guy-apalooza
Iron Man, also streeting on Sept. 30.
But Sony could have had second thoughts, worrying that people will make
Iron Man a priority, and not additionally shell out money for older catalog films.
To be honest, I really did like
My Best Friend's Wedding. It's one of the last films where Julia Roberts is fun and a little zany, before she turned all serious and motherly. But it doesn't really have that visual oomph to make me want to run out and buy it again on Blu-ray.
