Working Out with the Pussycat Dolls

November 30, 2009

Pussycat Dolls founder and chief choreographer Robin Antin was in a lively mood when we spoke on the phone last week about the upcoming Robin Antin’s Pussycat Dolls Workout DVD, the first-ever fitness program from the sexy girl group and dance ensemble. The Anchor Bay title streets on Dec. 15.

Hell, first I thought it was simply me, even though I’d never had an opportunity to charm celebrated dancer/choreographers/business women on the phone before. It was only after our conversation that I learned of how there’s a reported rift between the Dolls lead singer Nicole Scherzinger and the balance of the babe-alicious act. And Antin was busy issuing statements that the Dolls, which she created in 1995 as a burlesque

troupe in L.A., were not having any problems.

“The Pussycat Dolls are very much alive and there is no truth to the silent treatment statements,” Antin said over the supposed cool-down of the white-hot women’s ensemble. “Nicole and the Dolls have always been close.”

A-ha! So, it wasn’t just me, but rather the opportunity to talk about something other than the Dolls tabloid tales!!

Well, I guess I picked the right subject, as Antin was all too eager to discuss the hour-long workout program, in which she appears and contributed routines.

“I wanted this workout to be different! Back in the day, I did lots of them,” Antin said. “I wanted to bring back the dancing kind of vibe that people enjoy. Basically, I wanted to teach and do what I would do—the kind of thing that I get a great work-out from it. It’s different from anything out there—you’ll be getting a great workout from just the warm-up.”

The program took about a week to produce—including rehearsals--according to Antin, who brought in veteran fitness program helmer Andrea Ambandos to direct.

“When the girls came in, I didn’t teach them much. Just some rehearsals and then we shot it. It was exhausting—one of the hardest things I’ve ever done,” admits Antin. “We had no breaks, just back-to-back shooting. Andrea was like a drill sergeant!”

Well, the hard work that went into the hard workout apparently energized Antin to what she told me was a “definite” follow-up DVD.

“I cannot wait to do the next one and I’m hoping to do it over the next couple of months,” she said. “I’m really hoping to people will use the PCD workout as their dance bible!”

Oh, and in case you were wondering, Nicole Scherzinger is very much alive and on the Pussycat Dolls Workout DVD, where she is also featured in a supplemental interview….!
