A Very British Gangster

By Ed Hulse -- Video Business, 9/15/2008

ECHO BRIDGE
Street: Oct. 7
Prebook: now
> Compelling doc about a British gangster who’s a real-life Tony Soprano.

We can thank the success of The Sopranos for the stateside marketing of this British doc about Manchester-based Mob boss Dominic Noonan, a garrulous, constantly preening punk who has spent 22 of his 39 years in prison. Glimpses into Noonan’s life exert the same kind of fascination as a car wreck—this stuff isn’t pretty, but you’re compelled to look. Director Donal MacIntyre doesn’t sugarcoat Noonan, but the film comes close to glorifying its reprehensible subject.

Shelf Talk: The obvious parallels between Noonan and fictional counterpart Tony Soprano should attract American interest. Also mention that Gangster has been well received on the film-fest circuit.

Documentary, color/B&W, NR (mature themes, language), 97 min., DVD $14.99
Extras: none
Director: Donal MacIntyre
