American Zombie

By Cyril Pearl -- Video Business, 7/14/2008

CINEMA LIBRE
Street: July 8
Prebook: now
> Clever mock-doc about zombies trying to assimilate into society.

Though it sounds like a horror film, American Zombie is a satirical look at how outsiders attempt to fit into society. A fine addition to the ever-expanding oeuvre of the undead, the film focuses on two filmmakers (director Grace Lee, John Solomon) who are shooting a verité-styled documentary about a quartet of Los Angeles’ high-functioning zombies (Austin Basis, Suzy Nakamura, Al Vicente, Jane Edith Wilson) attempting to assimilate. The project is relatively easygoing until the crew shoots at “Live Dead,” a zombies-only retreat, where the situation takes a dangerous and unexpected turn.

Shelf Talk: American Zombie was well-received at film festivals, including SXSW. Zombie-flick fans are legion, so let them know about this one. The fun cover art of a zombified, bloody hand raised in a power salute also will bring in curious parties.

Mockumentary, color, NR (mature themes, violence, gore), 91 min., DVD $24.95
Extras: director/writer/cast commentary, featurette, behind-the-scenes footage
