MARCH 20 | Blockbuster this week began giving away an online computer-game version of Stephen King’s The Mist in an effort to promote the Weinstein Co. film, which will be released on DVD next week.
Players, who may download the game through April 8, can view an interview with King and move director Frank Darabont by making it through three of the game’s competition levels, Blockbuster said. On March 25, the movie-rental chain will release the DVD exclusively for rental as part of its agreement with The Weinstein Co.
Blockbuster is trying to boost sales by getting exclusive rights to rent movies from certain film producers. Earlier this month, the company said it signed a deal for two-year exclusive rental and sell-through rights for all films from Cablevision unit IFC Entertainment.
Other Weinstein films under Blockbuster’s exclusive rental agreement include the Michael Moore documentary Sicko and Quentin Tarantino’s and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse.
The Mist is based on the 1985 short story about a mist that engulfs Bridgton, Maine.
