> Forceful tale about the man who abolished slavery in the U.K.

This stirring true story focuses on William Wilburforce (Ioan Gruffudd), a member of British parliament who doggedly tried to end slavery in England during the 19th century. The film begins after Wilburforce has struggled for years to abolish the practice, his health suffering in the process. Helping him to carry on his struggle is his new romantic interest (Romola Garai) and John Newton (Albert Finney), a former slave captain who wrote the film's titular hymn. A history lesson from veteran director Michael Apted (Coal Miner's Daughter, the Up series) that is sharply written, handsomely photographed and skillfully acted (the stalwart supporting cast includes Toby Jones, Rufus Sewell, Ciaran Hinds and Michael Gambon), Amazing Grace offers classy entertainment and even enlightenment for audiences tired of movies that hit you over the head with their messages.

Shelf Talk: This film proved to be a pleasant surprise earlier this year, taking in more than $20 million following a slate of regional playdates, strong word-of-mouth and surprisingly long theatrical runs. There's an appeal to arthouse attendees, the faith market and urban audiences, which might explain its popularity. Likewise, this could be an “Amazing” holiday keepsake for its interested parties.

Historical drama, 111 min., PG (language, mature themes), DVD $29.99
Extras: director's commentary, featurette, music video
Director: Michael Apted
First Run: L, Feb. 2007, $22 mil.
