> Gibson's meticulously crafted but disturbing historical epic will need strong advertising and promotional support.

Set during the twilight of Mayan civilization, Mel Gibson's much-ballyhooed epic validates the hype. It's a relentless, adrenaline-fueled action thriller crammed with disturbingly graphic violence. Peaceful native Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood) is captured in the South American forest and taken to the great Mayan city, where he faces horrible death but escapes in an attempt to rescue his wife and young son. Gibson's troubling penchant for torture-porn imagery makes Apocalypto tough sledding, as does the fact that it's in Mayan with English subtitles, but curiosity among those who passed on it during its theatrical run should enhance rental trade.

Shelf Talk: Unlike Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, Apocalypto was neither a critical nor commercial blockbuster, and it remains to be seen if the filmmaker's recent bad publicity will negatively impact DVD sales. Nominated for a Golden Globe and three Oscars (all in technical categories), the film failed to bring home the bacon. Widespread advertising in print and broadcast media should goose trade, but it's difficult to predict how well this one will do.

Foreign-language adventure, color, R (graphic violence, disturbing images), 138 min., DVD $29.99, BD $34.99, Mayan with English subtitles
Extras: director's commentary, featurette, deleted scene
Director: Mel Gibson
First Run: W, Dec. 2006, $50.9 mil.
