> The classic '80s romance gets an extras-laden DVD makeover.
This touchstone of '80s romantic cinema arrives in a special edition package that far exceeds its 2000 DVD release. Of the new material, the 30-minute retrospective "An Officer and a Gentleman: 25 Years Later" reveals that the Sgt. Foley role immortalized by Louis Gossett Jr. was originally written for a white actor. Almost as interesting is "Return to Port Townsend," in which Gossett visits the Washington hamlet where the movie was shot—which hasn't changed all that much. The only supplement on the earlier, nearly bare bones edition—an informative commentary track by director Taylor Hackford—also is available here.
Shelf Talk: Twenty-five years later, Richard Gere remains a heartthrob who can still bring in the business when he's making some romantic maneuvers. Take 2004's Shall We Dance, for instance, which was a surprise Top 20 mid-year renter in 2005. And Officer is arguably Gere's most romantic work. His white uniform-clad image prominently displayed on the package will remind potential buyers just what appealed to them a quarter-century ago. The $14.99 SRP also makes this an easy buy decision, especially considering the breadth of extras material here.
