The fire of Barbra Streisand. The magnetism of Kris Kristofferson. The reckless world of big-time rock 'n' roll. All three bring a new passion and timeliness to A Star Is Born, one of the screen's classic love stories (previously filmed in 1937 and 1954) and winner of five Golden GlobeO Awards, including Best Picture, Actress and Actor (Musical/Comedy). Paul Williams, Kenny Loggins, Leon Russell and others worked with Streisand on one of the most popular song scores ever, topped by the Streisand/Williams Evergreen winning the Academy AwardO and Golden GlobeO Award as 1976's Best Original Song. Their teamwork resulted in a box-office triumph as well as "a considerable achievement" (Clive Hirschhorn, The Hollywood Musical).

Warner, color, 140 min. plus supplements, Dolby Digital 5.1, widescreen, Street: Nov. 28, $19.97; First Run: W, Dec. 1976, $37 mil.

This year, Barbra Streisand fans will get a double dose of the diva as she wraps up a rare national tour and releases this 30th anniversary DVD debut. Star's love story and its emotions still hold up, and the remastered Dolby Digital soundtrack works wonders in capturing a distinct and dynamic musical era gone by. On Streisand's feature commentary, there's plenty of the diva's qualities and feistiness, which many have come to know and love (or hate, depending on one's point of view). She discusses the choices she made in terms of scene design, wardrobe and line readings. Because she was the film's executive producer and had final cut, Streisand called many of the shots. It's interesting to note the direct parallels between Streisand and the life of her film character, Esther, and the ways they were both reshaped by fame. Streisand frequently toots her own horn, discussing her Oscar and Golden Globe wins, but she also reveals one of the major reasons why she got into show business in the first place: She was tired of walking into a room and being ignored. The disc includes several deleted scenes with informative commentary by Streisand. But the most unique supplement is a collection of wardrobe tests for the film. It's a thrilling march through '70s fashion, and Streisand talks about her exotic apparel, much of which came from her own closet. The film's best music interludes were recorded live in one take, because Streisand didn't like to lip synch, so concert film fans should appreciate this approach. And Streisand fans old and new will be delighted to hear so much, both musically and professionally, from the superstar they admire.
