Univision launches video unit

Ventura's Studio Latino division to distribute

MAY 16 | Univision Communications is launching Univision Home Entertainment, with Spanish-language films from Univision Television Networks hitting DVD beginning May 24.

Studio Latino, operated by Ventura Entertainment, will distribute Univision's discs, to be bundled under the moniker Unicine.

Univision Television Group president Michael Wortsman will run the Los Angeles-based DVD unit.

Retailers slated to carry the Unicine titles include Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Tower Records and Circuit City.

The debut batch of 10 titles consists of dramas and comedies, including La Diosa del Puerto, Taquito de Ojo, Corazon de Tequila, Secuestro and Compradres a la Mexicana.

"By launching a home entertainment business, Univision is once again demonstrating its commitment to serving the U.S. Hispanic community by providing Spanish-language entertainment options to meet the needs of this underserved but influential and growing population," Univision's Wortsman said.

"Univision's stature among Spanish-speaking consumers elevates the entire Latino DVD category for the industry and will be a catalyst for more growth in this genre," Ventura executive VP and general manager Chris Lynch said.

Other initial titles include Escuadron de la Muerte, El Fisgon del Hotel, Verdugo de Traidores and Asalto en Tijuana.
