Amazon's CustomFlix offers National Archive films
JULY 30 | Amazon.com’s DVD-on-demand service CustomFlix Labs has inked a deal with the National Archives and Records Administration to make historic films, documentaries and newsreels available on disc. Universal newsreels from 1920 to 1967, covering everything from the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the 1960 Nixon-Kennedy debate, are available starting today through CustomFlix.

DVD sales lift Viacom earnings
AUG. 2 | DVD sales of Charlotte’s Web, DreamGirls (pictured) and Norbit helped drive a 35% increase in home entertainment revenue at Viacom in the last quarter, the company said Thursday. Home entertainment revenue in the studio entertainment division reached $545 million in the second quarter ended June 30.

Weak video slate drags Disney earnings
AUG. 1 | A weak home video slate dragged down operating income in Walt Disney Co.’s studio entertainment division during the latest quarter. In the studio entertainment division, operating income slid 20% to $192 million, with no home video title comparable to the prior year’s The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which sold more than 18 million DVDs.

Navarre moves DVD label BCI to corporate headquarters
AUG. 1 | Navarre Corp. is relocating DVD label BCI to the indie distributor’s corporate headquarters in New Hope, Minn. The move from BCI’s current Los Angeles base is expected to better leverage corporate DVD distribution assets.

Time Warner revenue up, filmed entertainment down in Q2
AUG. 1 | Despite falling filmed entertainment revenue, Time Warner recorded mostly improved earnings in its second quarter. In the absence of a strong DVD release to compare to last year’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Time Warner’s second-quarter 2007 film revenue slipped 5% to $2.3 billion. Best performing DVDs included Pan’s Labyrinth, distributed by sister unit New Line Home Entertainment.

DreamWorks sets third Shrek for Nov. 13
JULY 31 | Shrek the Third is coming to DVD Nov. 13, DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg confirmed Tuesday during a company conference call. But the studio didn’t say whether the film would also get a release on HD DVD or Blu-ray Disc.
